Women Scientists Trapped in Gender Bias and Stereotypes

Women scientists have been tortured not only by gender bias in the science community, but also by gendered representations in the media for more than a century, and it continues to this day.

1. Introduction
2. Female scientists who were overlooked due to sexism of the scientific world
3. Gender bias still common in science
4. Century-old gendered representations in the media
5. Todays media still misrepresent women scientistsThe relationship between science and women haven’t always been easy. Even today, it doesn’t seem to be easy. In 2012, an experimentation on gender bias revealed that science faculty prefers male college graduates to equally qualified women candidates applying for a laboratory manager position. According to research done by Yale University, thirty percent of professors in chemistry, biology, and physics from six research-intensive universities “exhibit bias against female undergraduates” by judging them “to be less competent and less worthy of being hired than an identical male student” (Moss-Racusin, Dovidio, Brescoll, Graham, & Handelsman, 2012, p.4). One noticeable finding of the study was that both male and female faculty displayed prejudice against female candidates, which could directly lead to the gender discrepancy in academic science. It shows that gender biases in science are still held by highly educated people, in spite of significant decreases in apparent bigotry against women over the last few decades. This gender bias is the prime reason that has led women’s unrecognition in science.
Women’s invisibility in science is well demonstrated by their underrepresentation among Nobel laureates. According to the Nobel Prize Committee, over one hundred and sixteen years between 1901 and 2016, a total of 588 laureates won the Nobel Prize in science (including physics, chemistry, and medicine), whereas only 17 females, around 3 percent of the total, have received this honor. Among a total of 175 laureates in Chemistry, just four women - Marie Curie in 1911, Irene Joliot-Curie in 1935, Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin in 1964, and Ada Yonath in 2009 - have won the prize. Physics has the worst record. A total of 203 laureates won the prize, and there were only two women - Marie Curie in 1903 and Maria Goeppert Mayer in 1963. The Nobel Prize is perhaps the most prestigious prize in science, and it must be a powerful motivator for scientists. However, deeply rooted bias again
